What historical event fascinates you the most?
The historical event I find fascinating is Little Ice Age (LIA) of the North Atlantic area that spanned about four and a half centuries.
(And gods help you if you read this. I’ve forgotten how much I enjoy writing informative things. It isn’t in APA format, but that is a moment of restraint on my part.)
From approximately 1300 to 1850, the LIA had large parts of the North Atlantic in its grips. Since it was not a global phenomenon, it is not considered a true ice age. The effects of the Little Ice Age could have been brought about by an untimely collision of interesting factors. One of these is decreased sunspot activity. Another reasoning:
“Climatologists believe that a combination of reduced solar output, changes in atmospheric circulation, and increased volcanism may have caused the Little Ice Age.”
Another still, and perhaps more heartbreaking, was the genocide of various Indigenous Populations in the Americas. Indigenous Peoples were systematically destroyed via rampant colonialism leading to the death, disruption, and reduction of their existing cities and communities; then the colonizers introduced diseases that they had no natural immunity to; and finally, by means of war, indentured servitude, and forcible displacement, Indigenous birth rates dropped dramatically.
In any case, it is my personal belief that the First Industrial Revolution brought about the rapid end of the Little Ice Age. And it seems that even the UN may agree with that belief. The United Nations places the blame on humans and their generation of greenhouse gases that exponentially increased within the last 200 years.
So! I enjoy the Little Ice Age. And I do not enjoy what has become of poor Turtle Island. That, folks, is a rant for another day.
