#WitchyWednesday: Week 7

Happy Wednesday!

I’ll be doing four prompts a week, on Wednesdays, tagged #WitchyWednesday on Twitter. I’m happy to clarify anything and respond to any questions or comments. Feel free to contact me as well! As for the prompts, they’re originally from a Tumblr post by user Baduhennasraven.

Here’s this week’s prompts:

  1. How do I believe divination works?
  2. What is my favorite element?
  3. What is my pre-spell/ritual routine?
  4. Simple or elaborate spells/rituals? Why?

How do I believe divination works?

This is a fun one! As I am an avid fan of tarot cards, cartomancy, runes, and pendulums, I believe divination works by telling the person exactly what they already know. Be it conscious knowledge or unconscious, I always warn people before I give a reading that the cards won’t tell you anything you don’t already know. It’s just whether or not you want, or are ready to, hear it.

There is definitely a bit of a psychological aspect to it as well. You can’t give a reading to someone who doesn’t want one. One just ends up reading themselves if they try. The person the reading is for has to be receptive to what they need to hear, else it’s just a bunch of paper or stones or whatever with no meaning to them.

What is my favorite element?

Water (and Air, if I’m honest).

I’m not a plant person by nature and I don’t like the heat all that much, so Fire isn’t my element. I’m a Cancer, in zodiac, so I guess it makes sense that I feel especially drawn to Water.

What is my pre-spell/ritual routine?

I don’t have one! Most of my spells are off the cuff, scrawled on the back of receipts or in a tiny pocket notebook. I’ve lost most of my old spells because of that. I need to get better at having a structure. Like: shower before, prep the spell, do the spell, and have cakes and ale to make sure my sugar doesn’t tank.

Simple or elaborate spells/rituals? Why?

Simple, for certain. Because I’m a kitchen witch primarily. Spells needn’t be more complicated than a recipe, in my mind. Granted, some recipes are very complicated and beyond my experience (note: I do not make flan for this very reason), but simple spells are how I roll.

Rituals are so few and far between done I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I did something that required a full ritual. I’m a magical slacker like that.
