Of Insurance and Insulin Costs

4 Months Without Insulin Approval from My Health Insurance

I’m frustrated with the American healthcare system. It’s so broken. And I’m trying to keep my chin up, but damn is it hard.

I really don’t have more words in me right now. I hope my friends and family in Florida get through the hurricane safely and that tomorrow is a better day than today.

Take your meds, folks.

  1. NO. NOPE. NOOOOPE. Nope. 4 months without is UNACCEPTABLE. Your doctor should know how long you’ve been without and have already adjusted your meds accordingly FOUR MONTHS AGO. There are literally DOZENS of insulin drugs on the market. Your health insurance should cover ONE at least! Prior auths take no more than a WEEK even for the shittiest insurance. What I suspect happened is your doctor’s staff didn’t put in for a PA four months back. They haven’t done anything for you since then. Your doctor needs to be notified and to prescribe something that IS covered. DO THIS: Contact your insurance in the morning and find out what insulins they cover. Get that info to your doctor. Your doc can then prescribe you for THAT med. Jesus…FOUR MONTHS??

    1. I have been calling and messaging through their MyChart app to try and get it. But it’s always one reason or nine others as to why it hasn’t gone through.
They refused to cover Ozempic, so we’re trying to get Lantus covered.
And the doctor hadn’t heard I was out or needed prior authorization for my insulin, so I assume the office staff just gave up or something. I’m sure they’re busy and I know it’s a high volume clinic.
On hold with insurance now. The worst hood music. It’s like, lite rock radio filled with static.

        BUSY FOR FOUR MONTHS??
Nope. Not buying it. There’s Lantus. There’s Humalog. There’s Semglee. Jesus fucking CHRIST.

Have you raised holy hell? No. Because you are shit at defending yourself and speaking up for yourself. You need to defend YOU as if YOU were your little brother or someone. Please begin giving an actual shit about yourself because I am not within driving distance to bitch these people out.

Channel your inner ME and when you call them with the information they need, make sure they realize that a FOUR MONTH delay sets you back to square one and that you will need ENOUGH medication to wean yourself back on to insulin at your old dose (units per day) that kept you regulated.

      2. I did raise hell yesterday, as politely as possible. Because my A1C is back to like 9.7 and I hate being tired all the time. I’ll keep on them. And I get paid Friday, so hopefully I’ll have insulin by the end of the week.

I’m trying. Bit by bit, but I’m trying. I’ve been watching what I eat (so much riced cauliflower and salads), and I’m sleeping/hydrating.

I’ll follow up with the doctor’s office on lunch today.
