I have a love of incense and scented candles. I don’t like the sprays, but I love essential oils. There’s particular scents that I have powerful, positive associations with and I blatantly abuse that fact when I’m having a bad brain day.
Miss my besties? It’s time for a cinnamon candle and/or some patchouli incense. Grandma Gator on the mind? Time for some lemongrass! Oo, just having a day where I’ve got the morbs? Either some Nag Champa or Super Hit incense. Feeling manic? Dragon’s Blood! Can’t sleep? California White sage or Vanilla. And just anytime is a wonderful time for a cinnamon or sandalwood candle!
My hands down favorites are Yankee Candle’s Midsummer’s Night or Witch’s Brew, Goose Creek Candles’ Crunchy Leaves or Halloween Party, and Frostbeard Studio’s Oxford Library or Sherlock’s Study. So damn good.
I know there is likely tons of research one could do about the scent-triggered memory stuff. Something about the hippocampus and amygdala having a link to the olfactory scent or some such. Anyway, not all scent memories are good things. The smell of Marlboro Reds can trigger flashbacks just as much as the smell of Opium perfume by Yves Saint Laurent can. Virginia Slims menthol 120s and burnt toast can toss me back face first down the metaphorical stairs of a PTSD flashback to where I’m back in high school, homeless and terrified.
So yeah, not all sunshine and rainbows. But such is mental illness.
Speaking of mental illness, I can no longer afford therapy. Which… sucks. A lot. I am still looking into local resources, but I am a little overwhelmed. And still job hunting while I try to balance school, the part-time work, and getting my own LLC off the ground.
Things will get better. They’d be a whole lot easier if I couldn’t get the almost $200 to file for my LLC and a registered agent. But I’ll get there.
I’m going to bed after I watch a nice, relaxing episode of Boulder Creek Railroad’s Ellie build an amazing whatever HO scale (1:87 scale) thing they’re up to lately… or a rerun. Not sure.
Take your meds, folks!
